A health care proxy is best thought of as a durable power of attorney for medical issues. Many hospitals have their patient’s complete a health care proxy form when they are admitted. However, hospitals will not have their patients complete health care advance directives, which is a more comprehensive document that spells out a patient’s wishes in greater detail. The health care proxy does not provide any of that kind of direction. Although not legally binding, these documents are often helpful for those left behind.
